Every January the same thing happens to me. People arrive having decided to practise four times a week, and by the second week of February most of them have stopped entirely.
The failure is almost never a lack of discipline. It is the size of the promise.
Four times a week is a plan for somebody else’s life
A person who has not practised in a year deciding to go four times a week has not made a commitment, they have made a bet against their own diary. One missed week and the plan is broken, and a broken plan is much easier to abandon than a small one is to keep.
Twice a week survives a bad week. Once a week survives a bad month.
Drop-in helps more than it looks like it does
Nothing here has to be signed up to, which people sometimes read as the studio not being serious. It is the opposite: a monthly rate you are not using becomes a reminder that you are failing at something, and the usual response to that reminder is to cancel it and stop coming altogether.
Paying for the class you actually attend removes that. A gap is just a gap.
Pick the class, not the intention
“More yoga this year” is not a thing you can do on a Tuesday. “The 9am on Tuesday” is.
Look at my timetable, find one class that genuinely fits the shape of your week, and come to that one until it stops being a decision. Add the second after that has happened, not before. Tell me which one you picked and I will notice when you are not there.
