The quietest month

Small classes are not lesser classes. They are the expensive ones everywhere else.

The town empties, the rain settles in, and I get quiet. Every year somebody treats this as my off period and stops coming.

What a small class actually is

Somewhere else, that is called semi-private and it costs several times what a group class costs.

Here it is just Tuesday in September. Four of you in a room with me having time to watch all four is the best thing I offer all year, and it is available precisely because nobody is in town.

The case for using it

If you have a thing you have been meaning to sort out, this is the window. Enough attention to be seen properly, enough space to use props without apologising, and enough time in a position for a correction to actually register.

Try the class you have been avoiding, too. The room where you might be the only person who does not know what they are doing is much less frightening when there are five people in it than when there are twenty.

The rhythm of the year

High season is for volume and energy. Low season is for the unglamorous technical work that high season has no room for.

People who practise here for years tend to end up on that pattern without planning it. They go hard from November to April and they fix things in September.

The weather

It is wet and it is humid and neither is a reason to stay in. The rain here is an event with a beginning and an end, not a condition, and the walk back is usually the best part.

The practical bit

My timetable moves in the quiet months and some things do not run. Check the schedule rather than assuming, and if you cannot tell, message me.

Then go. In three months you will be queuing.
