Whale season

The best reason to be awake early that anyone has come up with.

Humpbacks come into Banderas Bay to breed and calve through the winter, and February is the middle of it. From the right bit of coast you can watch a forty tonne animal throw itself out of the water while you are still holding a coffee.

Why this is in a studio blog

Because it is the only thing that reliably gets visitors out of bed, and in high season my morning class is the best one I run.

The early classes are quieter, the room is cooler, and the town has not started yet. People who intend to practise in the evening are competing with dinner, with everyone else’s plans and with the sort of tiredness that arrives at five in the afternoon and wins.

The actual argument

Make a morning. Walk to the water first, see what is happening out in the bay, then come to a class. You have done the two best things available here before most of your holiday has woken up.

The walk in is not incidental either. Arriving having already moved for twenty minutes is a completely different start to a class than arriving straight from a bed.

For people who live here

You have stopped noticing. Everyone does, by the third season.

Take one morning in February and go and look properly. It is a strange privilege to live somewhere this happens and there is no version of being used to it that is an improvement.

Practical

Sea conditions decide everything and nothing is guaranteed on any given day. That is the nature of it. Two mornings gives you good odds, one morning gives you a coin toss and a nice walk.

Check my class times before you plan the morning rather than after. The timetable knows and this page does not, and it changes.
