What Jivamukti actually is

The one on the timetable with music in it.

Jivamukti is a named method, founded in New York in the 1980s, and it is distinct enough from the rest of my timetable that turning up expecting generic yoga will be a surprise. So let me tell you what you are walking into.

What is different about it

Three things, mostly.

It is physically strong. The sequences move, and they keep moving.

It has a theme. Each class is built around an idea rather than just a set of postures, and the teacher will talk about it. Some people find this the best part of the practice and some find it the reason they choose a different class, and both are reasonable.

There is chanting and music. Not as background, as part of the class.

Who it is not for

Anybody wanting a silent room. That is not a criticism of either preference, it is just worth knowing before you pay for the class rather than after.

If quiet is what you are after, the Iyengar and restorative classes are the other end of the same timetable.

Options are given

Nastasia trained in India and Berlin and holds a 900-hour Jivamukti certification. Her classes give options throughout, so beginner to advanced can work in the same room without anyone being either lost or bored.

You do not need to know the chants. I promise nobody is tested at the door.
